Ceiling texture is found above your head in almost any house or building that you enter. Most homes today have interior walls and ceilings that are covered with wallboard, sometimes called sheetrock. Sheet rock makes a very nice smooth surface for walls and ceilings, however to add visual appeal, is often added.
There are many ways add to your room. For the past thirty five years and acoustic or popcorn ceiling has been very popular.
The popcorn ceiling texture is easily applied and requires no paint. A mixture containing the Styrofoam beads that make up the popcorn ceiling is added to a hopper which has a spray gun attached to an air compressor. The mixture is sprayed onto the ceiling and allowed to dry. Once dry, the ceiling is finished. This texture has a couple of problems. First, it is difficult to paint over a popcorn ceiling when it becomes dirty and second, it is difficult to remove dust from the ceiling without removing the popcorn.
You may be reading this article because you are tired of the popcorn ceiling in your home. The popcorn can be scrapped off using a wide putty knife. This is a messy job that will require lots of vacuuming. The results will be a ceiling that makes your home look much more modern.
The same machine used to apply popcorn ceiling texture can also be used to apply an orange peel texture. The orange peal is normally a very light texture made of sheetrock “mud” and it must be painted in order to finish.
Another effect can be made if a flat trowel is pulled across the orange peel texture. This tends to give the room a very Mediterranean look and is called a knock down texture.
If you do not have the air compressor or hopper, then you can also apply by hand. The entire ceiling needs to be covered with the sheetrock mud. Then you can add texture with an old paint roller, a paint brush, stencils or even your own finger. The idea is to add both texture and visual appeal to the ceiling.
Once you have replaced the ceiling texture in your home, you are ready for painting. Ceilings are sometimes painted a ceiling white that can be left alone when the walls to the room are painted. Today, however, the trend seems to be to paint the walls and ceiling all the same color. This gives the room a much more modern feel.
